Skeletal muscle high energy phosphate metabolism in patients with obesity and impaired fasting blood glucose

چکیده
Methods Method: Ten obese participants with IFG (O+IFG), defined as BMI>30 and fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dl or HbA1c ≥ 5.7, twelve obese participants without IFG (OIFG), and five non-obese subjects with normal fasting glucose underwent calf muscle 31P MRS with saturation transfer measures of CK metabolism at rest on a Philips 3T MRI/MRS system. The CK pseudo-first-order rate constant, k (sec-1) was calculated using TRiST and relative high-energy phosphate levels as previously described [1,2]. O-IFG and O+IFG subjects also underwent treadmill exercise testing for determination of maximal exercise time and peak oxygen consumption. Group comparison and correlations within each group were performed using XLSTAT package.

Frequency of diabetes mellitus in patients with skin tags
Background and aim: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease with multiple complications. Skin tag is a pedunculated papule, which is more common in women and has been suggested as a cutaneous marker of diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of diabetes mellitus in patients with skin tags.Materials and methods: This descriptive study was...
متن کاملThe Root of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidzumi Prevents Obesity and Glucose Intolerance and Increases Energy Metabolism in Mice
Targeting energy expenditure offers a strategy for treating obesity more effectively and safely. In previous studies, we found that the root of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidzumi (Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba, ARA) increased energy metabolism in C2C12 cells. Here, we investigated the effects of ARA on obesity and glucose intolerance by examining energy metabolism in skeletal muscle and brown fat i...
متن کاملPrevalence and Risk Factors of Diabetes, Pre-Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome in First-Degree Relatives of Patients with Type II Diabetes
Background & Aims: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and risk factors for diabetes, pre-diabetes and metabolic syndrome in first-degree relatives(FDRs) of patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: In a cross-sectional study between 2003 and 2005, 3228 of first-degree relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes (841 men and 2387 women) from Isfahan Endocrine and Metabolism Resear...
متن کاملPrevention of obesity and insulin resistance by glucokinase expression in skeletal muscle of transgenic mice.
In type 2 diabetes, glucose phosphorylation, a regulatory step in glucose utilization by skeletal muscle, is impaired. Since glucokinase expression in skeletal muscle of transgenic mice increases glucose phosphorylation, we examined whether such mice counteract the obesity and insulin resistance induced by 12 wk of a high-fat diet. When fed this diet, control mice became obese, whereas transgen...
متن کاملUrsolic Acid Increases Skeletal Muscle and Brown Fat and Decreases Diet-Induced Obesity, Glucose Intolerance and Fatty Liver Disease
Skeletal muscle Akt activity stimulates muscle growth and imparts resistance to obesity, glucose intolerance and fatty liver disease. We recently found that ursolic acid increases skeletal muscle Akt activity and stimulates muscle growth in non-obese mice. Here, we tested the hypothesis that ursolic acid might increase skeletal muscle Akt activity in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity. We st...
